Between 2:05 and 2:20 today (July 13th) a male Dickcissel scolded me
from various positions in the field 0.4 miles east of American Corner in
Caroline County. It was not there when I first stopped my truck, but when I
walked the roadside beside the field it flew in from somewhere farther back
in the field, lit on one of the trees close to the road, and proceeded to
scold until I left. When it left the roadside tree, it took a position in a
Sassafras bush, then moved to the nearby line of white pines. This bird was
using the west side of the four-row group of pines, not the pines in the
line closest to American Corner.
The continuous and intense scolding behavior sure looked like
territorial protection, even though there was no evidence of nest or female
during the 15 minutes of my visit.
