Yesterday, Jan 29, Song Sparrows in Bowie began singing for the first
time this season - about on schedule. Titmouses and House Finches began
singing (as distinct from calling) today.

Visible from the public Recycle Center on Brown Station Rd is a small
pond, in the past harboring a surprisingly good mix of wintering
water-fowl and Hooded Merg's. Lately it has been taken over by so many
Canada Geese there is scarcely room for anyone else; still, it hosted
this mix yesterday:
Canada Goose 1,000
N. Shoveller 20
Gadwall 2
Ring-neck's 6
Lesser Scaup 1
Green-wing Teal 1

This little-known pond can make a nice complement to a visit to near-by
School-house Pond in Upper Marlboro.
