I recall in OSPREY about this time last year a discussion that took place concerning Mockers fooling people into thinking they were hearing "hot" birds.  Apparently, at this time of year mocking birds give a modified version of their normal song where they may give a only single impersonation rather than the normal rapidly shifting series of impersonations that we are used to during the warm months.  In any event, you did what i would have done and posted your observation and hopefully, it will be confirmed by someone.
