Note: Normally I wouldn't post the nest of a Raven, but this nest is easily
viewed from a public road and I don't feel the welfare of the birds or
property owners is in jeopardy.
Today on my way home from Western Maryland I found a Common Raven nest in SE
Frederick County. The location is on Rt. 80 just west of Rt. 75 on a large
red and white radio? tower. The nest is on the south side of the tower and
faces the road. This location is notable because it is on the Piedmont and is
less than 2 miles from Montgomery County and less than 5 from Carroll and
Howard Counties. This pair is a likely source for recent records in the area.
I wanted to alert people to the fact that this species is expanding eastward
and there is ample habitat if they don't mind using tall towers. I would
expect there to be first breeding records for counties in the very near future.
Jim Stasz will be posting a full report of our weekend.
Good birding,
Matt Hafner
