I have written an article on ground-nesting birds for the newsletter of the
American Chestnut Land Trust, a 20-year-old land trust in central Calvert
County which owns and/or manages over 3000 protected acres in the Parker's
Creek and Governor's Run watersheds. The article is intended to convince
dog owners to leash their dogs when walking on the woods. It has been
reviewed by David Curson of MD-DC Audubon and local birder Sue Hamilton.
The trust would like one or a few photos of some of the birds mentioned. (I
don't have any.) The ground-nesting birds in the article are: Whip-poor-
will, Black-and-white Warbler, Worm-eating Warbler, Ovenbird, Louisiana
Waterthrush, Kentucky Warbler, Chuck-will's-widow, Northern Bobwhite, and
American Woodcock. Other species included as having nests on or just above
the ground are Eastern Towhee, Field Sparrow, and Common Yellowthroat.
Three additional species mentioned in the article, whose mean nest height
is less than 4', are White-eyed Vireo, Hooded Warbler, Yellow-breasted
Chat, and Prairie Warbler.
It is not possible to print the photos in color, so birds with interesting
patterns would be most successful, such as the Hooded Warbler, Towhee, and
Yellowthroat.
If anyone has digital photos they are willing to share, please let me know
as soon as possible. Photos will be credited, but no financial compensation
is available.
thanks very much,
