May Count started on the right note with a Grasshopper Sparrow singing eight
feet away from the van on Hernwood Road. I found three at this location near
the WCBM radio towers. In addition, I tallied Song, Field, Chipping, and
Savannah at the same location. Later in the afternoon a couple of
White-throated made brief appearances.
I also had two Olive-sided Flycatchers perched on a snag, in a clearing,
deep into the Patapsco Valley State Park (PVSP). They chased each for a
short time. ³Pic-pic² was the only vocalization they made; I did not hear
the ³quick-three-beers² song. Both birds returned to perch atop the dead
trees and started fly catching. Perhaps it was the wind direction; but, they
seemed like they did not want to turn their backs to me. The size, and the
strong, dark vest made the ID stick. Other flycatchers included: Eastern
Wood-pewee, Acadian Flycatcher, Eastern Phoebe, Great-crested Flycatcher,
and Eastern Kingbirds.
Warbler were few and far between. I did however get the following species:
Northern Parula, Yellow Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Magnolia Warbler,
Pine Warbler, Prairie Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler,
American Redstart, Worm-eating Warbler, Ovenbird, Louisiana Waterthrush, and
Common Yellowthroat.
Three Bobolink, three Blue Grosbeak, and two Meadowlarks!
Total Species - 88
