Yesterday eve I saw what I think was a post breeding adult royal tern
foraging and feeding at Jug Bay, from Jackson Landing around 6:30 PM. It
stayed around for about 15 minutes then flew out of sight down river. It
was silent; I never heard it call, but its bill was yellow/orange. It had
very pale wing primaries, almost white, but I could still see the faint
dark tips, which were more obvious underneath but still faint. Its black
cap/crown was shabby looking (I read that it is all black only very
briefly during breeding), which is why it may be a post-breeder. I have
seen them here in both spring and fall, but this is my first summer ROYT
here.
