Thanks Sue. That's helpful. But I'm puzzled about why this has to be a lost 
bird. There are breeding colonies of Monk Parakeets north of Maryland (I've 
seen them in NYC and CT), so why couldn't this just be a wanderer. If they 
prefer warmer climes, it seems to me it is just a matter of time before they 
wind up in MD anyway?

Anyone have thoughts on this one way or the other?

This is in response to recent postings about Monk Parakeets from Douglas
Bolt, Christine Lamont, and Phil Davis.



As an owner of a Quaker Parrot (which is what the bird is called in the pet
trade), I can vouch for the hardiness of the species! More than likely, the
birds recently are escapes from hapless owners who are probably looking for
them. There is probably not much chance of catching the bird at Ft. McHenry,
but if a Quaker (or any other parrot) showed up in my backyard, I would try
to capture it. Then I would place an ad in the local paper, and check with
local veterinary clinics to see if someone had reported a lost "companion"
bird. And, in this day and age of the computer, I would go on-line, because
people also post missing birds.



I referred to the bird as a "companion," because that is how many of us
parrot owners consider the feathered-members of our family! If you would
