Cromwell Valley Park Hawkwatch Sunday, Sept.17th 2006
Under clear blue skies and with little wind, we knew it might be a difficult day to see high flying
raptors. From 8:00 am until 11:00 am we had counted only a handful of Broad-winged Hawks and
a small number of Sharpies. However, by noon we began to get a nice mix of clouds and sun, and
we started to see an increase in our target species, the Broadwings. The one o'clock hour brought
nearly 100 BWs,and that was just a taste of what was to come. Between 2:00pm and 3:00 pm well
over 1,000 BWs were counted, the largest group consisting of 500+ BWs streaming high directly
over head. Smaller kettles were seen until 5:30 pm. Thanks to all who assisted in counting,
especially Sue Ricciardi who's skill and expertise were invaluable!
