Hugh frequently led the Saturday morning birdwalks at Woodend when my  
friends and I started birding, a few years ago. He was as forgiving  
of our beginners' mistakes as he was knowledgeable and helpful. We  
learnt a lot from him. Last year three of us had the privilege of  
doing the Christmas Bird Count with him. I was already looking  
forward to a repeat this year...
