Too true, better conservation of habitat is a much better over all, long term plan, (hey, I work for a big conservation group so...) but sportsmen are a large and key player in the overall conservation effort - their support is really needed. After all if there is no habitat left, there is nowhere and nothing to hunt...pathetic I know and no excuse. By and large I am of the opinion (flame guard at the ready...) that we chased all the elk, deer, moose, etc. off the plains etc. so we could grow our cows, eat the darn cows BUT since I am not queen of the universe...
I think managed (note the 'managed') hunting helps balance out the inbalances we've created by destroying habitat and chasing/killing larger predators like wolves, bears, and mountain lions out of our way - I think they (wolves bears, mountains lions) are a more effective population check than Jeeps, Denalis, and Buicks...

Yes, but that doesn't mean the answer is to increase the number of
hunters; the answer is to fund the expansion of habitat by some
mechanism that would work better in today's world. This reminds me of
the myth that some people can't get health insurance *because* their
employer doesn't provide it - just because that's the way it's always
been done.
