My wife, Carolyn, and I rushed out this morning to check on the
Fieldfare, since we are well aware of the great Robin roost beside Rte 50 in
Easton. Unfortunately the Legal Spirits Tavern was closed for kitchen
improvements so we could only peek through the windows. No sign of the
birds; but we did manage to glimpse one Grizzly Bear standing in a corner of
the place.
After that we headed to Somerset County to stand for a couple of hours
with others while waiting for the wind to calm and the temperatures to rise.
No Tropical Kingbird while we were there (11:00 to 1:00).
Then onward to Hooper's Island where the two Eurasian Collared Doves
were cooing cutely while they shared the top of a power pole. The old house
near the Collared Dove site was also hosting an Eastern Phoebe, scarfing
insects just like the TC was supposed to have been doing.
On our way toward Hooper's Island we encountered an enormous flock of
blackbirds - nearly all were Common Grackles, but three Brown-headed
Cowbirds and one Starling could be singled out. Rough estimate of the
numbers would be over 1 million, but probably less than 2 million. (Didn't
take time to count more closely than that.)
Back home near Tunis Mills we are up to 29 species for the past two
days, highlighted by Belted Kingfisher, Great Horned Owl, Eastern Towhee and
Cooper's Hawk.
