I guess I saw at least one of these transitioning R-N Grebes this
morning at Point Lookout. The one I saw best was riding very low in the
water, so not much of the red was showing, but it was quite visible, and
the cap was very distinct. It confused me at first, because I wasn't
expecting that plumage. Otherwise, lots (about 50) of Oldsquaw (OK, OK,
Long-tailed Ducks, but I still think Oldsquaw is a neat name) and
Buffleheads (100 or more), a few scoters (3 Surf, 3 Black), 4
Goldeneyes, about 30 R-B Mergansers, 6-8 Common Loons, 4 Tundra Swans (2
adult, 2 immature). There was a pretty cold breeze when I first arrived
about 9AM, but it warmed up nicely by noon.
