Two nights ago, we went up to the part of Rock Creek Park to look for the
American Bittern that had been seen near the intersection of Beach Drive and
Kensington Parkway. No luck (it probably left when the stream clean-up crews
came through). We decided to console ourselves by checking out the
nest-building YCNH on Chevy Chase Lake Drive (the street we used to live on)
and sure enough, they were quickly found in exactly the same tree and same
limb as last year.

Last night, friends came over for dinner. When they got out of the car, they
looked at our formerly beautiful oak tree that has been hacked to bits by
overzealous tree trimmers. And as they were looking up, they saw - in the
trees right next to our house - THREE Yellow-crowned Night Herons. One flew
off fairly quickly, but the other two hung around, one displaying to the
other. Eventually, they both flew off - in different directions. One headed
towards Chevy Chase Lake Drive (as did the first) and the other flew off in
a northwesterly direction, towards Connecticut Avenue and the Beltway.

Now THAT was a nice treat!
