I was out at Lake Artemesia with the kids for a picnic this afternoon and
had finally brought the camera hoping to snap a couple of shots of a Caspian
Tern. While we were sitting on the dock eating, I noticed an odd goose out
on the lake. It didn't look like at all like a hybrid Canada, nor like
anything I've seen before so I took a couple of photos. Just got back home
and thanks to Google, have found that I suspect it is a Bar-Headed Goose.
It did leave the lake perhaps 15 minutes later flying in a more or less
westerly direction (this would probably be around noon or shortly
thereafter). I have no idea if it was an escapee, I tried to look for that
while it was in the water (figuring it wasn't some kind of hybrid, etc.),
but couldn't see the feet. It was already a ways up in the air when I saw
it flying away and I was trying to get other field marks before it got too
far... I didn't think then to look at the feet. Hopefully someone else will
find it on another body of water nearby!
Here's one of the 3 shots I took (all were virtually identical, and sorry
for the large file size):

Does this look like a Bar-Headed goose? Other theories?
Other birds were 1 Caspian Tern (who showed up as we were heading home...
got a descent photo!) and the first Purple Martins I've seen this year (5 of
them near the Martin House)
Good Birding,
