For the first time since 1993, I worked the towpath
and river bank from Great Falls up toward Swains Lock
for the May Count. I recorded 57 species, plus two
more just downriver from the old (?) visitors center.

Highlights from my standpoint on a slow day for
landbirds were: 21 male Wood Ducks together on a
couple of rocks in the middle of the river, with 2 (1
male, 1 female) Ring-necked Ducks and 2 male Common
Goldeneyes around the rocks; 1 American Coot visible
on the far shore of Conn Island, and of course the
Bald Eagle nest that was barely visible from the
viewing platform near the visitor center.

Late in the morning, north of Violettes Lock, I saw a
female large Merganser, which I believe was a Common.
At Riley's Lock I saw two Horned Grebes. Then I went
to Hughes Hollow, and was treated to a nice view of an
adult Common Moorhen swimming in plain view for a few
minutes in the large impoundment on the left (east) as
you walk away from the parking lot near the western
junction of Hunting Quarter / Hughes Road and River
Road. Later still, I spied a young Common Loon in the
Potomac near the end of Sycamore Landing Road.
