Prompted by Jim Wilkinson's post regarding of Red-
headed Woodpecker, Bobolink, and Vesper Sparrow in
the Rocky Ridge/Detour Rd. area of Frederick Co., below
are some other freshly visited (June 8) spots hosting these
birds.
At least one male Bobolink offers accommodating views
in a field off of Longs Mill Rd. (east of intersection w/ Eaton
Rd. and west of intersection with New Cut Rd.). The field is
east of "Ray-Lynn Farms" (a reddish stone house on right with
address 8875) and the fences downhill in the field on the
south side of the road are his regular perching spots.
Red-headed Woodpeckers have recently been easy
to pick up on the road-side fence posts just about three miles
east of there. A good spot to see them is at the intersection of
Legore Bridge Rd. and Myers Rd. on the fence posts and
shade trees that border the bare field on the NE.
Vesper Sparrows are reliable in the fields about a
mile east of that. At the first spot, a field on the south side of
Legore Bridge Rd. just west of house 12802, knowing the
song is most helpful as at least one Male regularly moves
between song perches along the tall trees bordering the
road. Look for the white frame behind the ear coverts and
the white outer tail coverts as he loops over the field
between perches. About a mile east of that, on Ligore Rd.
just west of Hiney Rd., there is a dirt drive on the left to a one
story yellow steel building (across from Mailbox 12536 on
right). This seems to be a good spot to watch Vesper's
foraging on the ground along the hedgerows. Good luck
and good birding!

Cheers,

Dave
