This morning around 9 a.m., I had a Yellow-Crowned Night Heron at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, a first for me at this site and in DC. When I first saw the bird, it was perched at the top of an evergreen tree near the center of the lilly ponds area. After I snapped a couple of photographs, it flew westward to land in another tree at the edge of the ponds area. I lost it when it flew off again.

This looked to me like a young adult. I didn't notice any signs of nesting. A few photos will be posted on our website, www.birdcouple.com, this evening.

Other birds of note were the large number of Phoebes (6 or more); 3 Cedar Waxwing, landing in the cat-tails! (or is that phragmites?; Green Heron; 4 Great Egrets at the far end of the marsh past the boardwalk; Common Yellowthroat calling in the distance; Killdeer. Also a Monarch butterfly, my favorite, and a massive snapping turtle that looked like a small tank.

	Good birding!
