We were at the Hughes Hollow impoundment this afternoon and saw 8 or so
peeps and a couple of killdeer on the dry marsh at the backshore of the main
impoundment. The peeps may have been those identified as Least Sandpipers
by Paul Woodward (seen yesterday). As a not too experienced shorebird
observer I have a question. How can I can I separate Least Sandpipers from
other peeps, for example Semipalmated Sandpipers? I viewed them through a
spotting scope with a 32x eyepiece and though they were quite distant it
seemed to me the legs were dark gray rather than yellowish. The Shorebird
Guide shows Least Sandpipers with yellowish legs. Semipalmated are shown
with dark (olive) legs and it’s pretty much the same in Sibley. I realize peep
identification can be difficult.
