Subject: Red Phalarope

Les,

I decided to try for the Red Phalarope today at Blackwater N.W.R. The first
time around I did not see the bird. I ran into Danny Poet on Key Wallace
Dr. and we birded together until around 4 p.m. The second time around
w/Danny we did find the bird exactly where you said it was when you spotted
it. We were able to view the bird through our scopes and w/ binos for close
to an hour. The bird worked up and down in the canal/ditch getting
progressively closer to us. We watched it fly twice, the second time it
landed approx. 125 ' away. It walked up on the mud, and hunkered down to
rest. The shorter thicker bill was obvious as was the pale gray unstreaked
back. Jim Greene, Helen Patton and Vince D. from our club as well as at
least a dozen others all got great looks.
A good bird brings people out of the woodwork. The Red Phalarope is not a
life bird for me but a first for me at Blackwater. Also of note we saw at
least 300+ Am. Wigeon, several dozen Gadwalls,
Pintails, Black Ducks and hundreds of Green-winged Teal and 4-BLUE-WINGED
TEAL, two Snow Geese (first of fall for me), two Tundra Swan and several
thousand Canada Geese. Quite a few small land birds around but nothing
unusual to report. A nice day.
