Hi Wendy,
     Squirrels will eat [and likewise destroy!] almost any seed holder.  They 
  do not, however, generally like nyger seed.  Contrary to most bird feeding 
  guides, DO NOT use peanut butter or ANY peanut mixture to "keep them 
  away from your feeders."
     It only attracts more squirrels that wil eventually resort to attacking
  your nyger feeders.
     You should have no trouble in attracting goldfinches to your yard.
