On Thursday 11/08 I took fourteen 2nd grade special education kids on a bird
walk around their playground. The field trip was preceded by a raptor slide
show where I played the bird calls for the kids. During the slide show, I
was very impressed when one of the kids correctly identified a baby Barn Owl
that I was holding in a picture. He said the heart shaped face gave it away.
One young man, who could read, was assigned to carry the field guide and he
looked up the birds for us. We saw 9 species in the mid-day ½ hour walk. The
best bird was a Turkey Vulture which flew low and directly over us. It
greatly impressed the kids.

Northern Cardinal

Red-bellied Woodpecker

Mourning Dove

American Goldfinch

Tufted Titmouse

Carolina Chickadee

Carolina Wren

European Starling

Turkey Vulture

Good birding,
