This morning I ventured out to Finzel Swamp and Piney Reservoir in Garrett,
Co. I had hoped to find some Evening Grosbeaks, as many reports are coming
out of Pennsylvania. No grosbeaks appeared, but I did see my first of the
fall American Tree Sparrow at Finzel Swamp, which was otherwise devoid of
much avian activity. On the road to Piney Reservoir I saw a nice mixed
flock of Dark-eyed Juncos, Black-capped Chickadees, Red-bellied Woodpeckers,
one Downy Woodpecker, and two Fox Sparrows -- first of the fall for me as
well. At Piney Reservoir waterfowl was scant with just one Ruddy Duck and a
group of ~25 Canada Geese. Another large flock of Juncos was seen foraging
along the bankside strip of trees. The only other birds of note were one
Swamp Sparrow and one Field Sparrow. Perhaps reports of Evening Grosbeaks or
other boreal finches will come this weekend.

Good birding,

David
