Yesterday (Sat, 12/22), I found a gull that looks like a 2nd cycle Thayer's
Gull. The bird was on a pier at the Washington Navy Yard, I viewed it from
the opposite side of the Anacostia River, near the Park Police HQ (and no
one stopped me from using my scope - yay!). Not sure I can positively rule
out Kumlien's Iceland, however the head and bill shape strongly point to
Thayer's. The bird was there in the morning, around 9:00am, loafing on the
pier before flying upriver and out of sight.
I have more bad pictures, which I'll try to post later. I also hope to go
gulling Monday morning if anyone is interested.
Good birding,
