Apologies for not posting yesterday's circuit of the Gun Club & environs
whilst the Skeeters & Trappers were ernestly blasting away. Highlights of
a 3 1/2 hr. amble were: a COOPER'S & RT HAWK, plus a 1st year BALD
EAGLE (speckling all over, no pattern), BLUEBIRDS & WAXWINGS,
both KINGLETS and a nice assortment of sparrows, incl. FIELD, FOX &
SWAMPERS. Also spotted: Deer, a distant PAINTED TURTLE on the
mud flats (alive?) and a luxuriantly furry RED FOX w/a puffy, chimney-
sweep tail.
Today, found time in mid-afternoon for a quick circuit of the south end
of the Pine Ridge Golf Club's wooded virges, a 1 1/2 hr. effort. Passer-
ines were virtually non-existent (? no SongFinder today) except Crows
and Starlings. Saw a surprisingly small no. of waterfowl, with the nota-
ble exception of about 112 HOODED MERGANSERS amongst most-
ly Canada Geese, the largest concentration of this sp. I've ever seen here.
Also notable: 3 GB HERONS, 5 MUTE SWANS and an immature BALD
EAGLE (prob. the same as yesterday). there were several hundred Canadas
and smaller no's of Baldpate, RN Duck, C Mergs and PB Grebe. Think I
saw more golf balls in the rough than most of the birds. Lots of deer; with
the exception of the driving range, the Whitetails & I ruled the course.
