I came for my lunch break, but showed up just after it left! I enjoyed talking
with Jim and Andy (several others were also present) until they left, and I
stayed there til 12:50. To my surprise, it returned twice! This was my fifth
try (all at the same time of day) and first time to see it.

The first time I saw it was at about 12:15 and it stayed only briefly (~2
minutes) before it and all the birds were dispersed for some reason known only
to them. It first appeared at the water tray, and then moved to the feeder
socks next to the water station. It fed on the thistle without any hesitance
despite the many goldfinches there at the same time. When it left we could
not tell where it went, and despite most of the goldfinches returning to the
area quickly, the crossbill remained out of sight. The next time it appeared
was about 12:40, and it stayed for about 10 minutes. It came to the thistle
feeder and joined the numerous goldfinches, and then after about 3-4 minutes
it flew to a nearby tree (the largest mature one close to the feeder; I think a
Cherry tree). We had great views during the entire time. It spent several
minutes there, behaving like a nuthatch and looking/prying under the bark.
Since I am unfamiliar with crossbills I don't know if this was odd or not. While
doing this, it seemed to favor the dark side of the tree (in the shadows). I
think it was foraging for insects, but don't know - I couldn't really see what if
anything it was finding. It then returned to the thistle socks, fed on thistle
for a few more minutes, and then flew off to who knows where.

Cheers!
