What I believe you are seeing are Fox Squirrels, which are red, slightly larger than your average Grey Squirrel, and have a range that overlaps with the Grey Squirrel.  Grey Squirrels can indeed be black (I've noticed that the black ones always seem to be smaller and leaner than the average grey Grey), or white (I once saw a melanistic, non-albino [the eyes weren't red] Grey on the White House grounds; normal colored eyes, white fur) but I don't believe they are ever red/reddish.

Subject: Black Gray Squirrels and Red Gray Squirrels in Snow Hill

I remember seeing a population of Black Gray Squirrels at Byrd Park in Snow  
Hill Maryland. There where also Red Gray Squirrels squirrels  there. It was 
quite a sight to see them mingling with the normal grays.
