Diane and I found a self-contained water fountain a few years ago at Johnson's Garden Center that features running water. The birds love it!
It's a hollow globe that sits on a water-filled base. The globe (resembling a cratered moon) has a tube running from the water in the base to a hole in the top of the globe. Water is pumped from the base reservoir through the tube where it exits at the top of the globe. It then runs down over the surface of the globe back into the base. The sound of the water dropping back into the base has proven to be very attractive to birds.
The globe is about 1.5 feet in diameter and with the base stands about 4 feet. If you'd like, I'll send you some pictures.
