About the Program
Lee Peterson, son of the late naturalist Roger Tory Peterson (1908 -
1996), discusses the publishing history of "A Field Guide to Birds."
Originally published in 1934, the first field guide designed for non-
scientists has sold over 8 million copies. During this event Mr.
Peterson also discusses his father's life and legacy and the newest
version of the field guide.
Roger Tory Peterson
Roger Tory Peterson (1908-1996) was a wildlife artist and naturalist
who created the idea of the portable field guide. First published in
1934, the field guide made it possible for professionals and amateurs
to study birds without shooting them, which had been the previous
practice. Mr. Peterson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom
by Jimmy Carter.
