I covered the C&O Canal from Milepost 27 (near Sycamore Landing) to Milepost 30 this morning as part of the Canal count.
I saw 31 species in all. Highlights were 2 Common Raven, lots of Golden-crowned Kinglets and Winter Wren, and a lot of Bufflehead, notwithstanding the presence of waterfowl hunters shooting along the 3 miles I covered. There were a lot of Canada Geese, avoiding the hunters by staying at the turf farm near Sycamore Landing for part of the morning.
This is slightly less than the number of species I had in this stretch on last year's count (33 last year), and the mix was different (this year no Common Goldeneye, Hooded Merganser, Mourning Dove, Northern Flicker (!), Fish Crow (!), Hermit Thrush, or Song Sparrow (!!)). New species from last year are marked below in my eBird report. Last year's numbers are in parentheses.
