Now my possibly silly question. The crows kept making a ruckus.Suddenly I
heard a Red-Shouldered Hawk screaming. I looked for the hawk unsuccessfully. I
truly sounded as if the hawk was right in the midst of the crows. Couldn't
see it. The owl flushed. Crows followed it. No sign of a buteo. Well, maybe I
just had a shy hawk sitting in front of me. Then I wondered at the many times
I have been fooled by blue jays sounding like a red-shouldered. Could other
corvids have a similar ability? Has anyone out there heard of such a thing?
Thanks

Don,
Not exactly, but once at Layhill Park (Montgomery County) I watched a Great
Horned Owl fly into a thick cedar tree, followed by a Red-shouldered Hawk
which landed in the same tree and began harassing the owl. So it may well have
been a hawk you heard. Don't know exactly why the hawks don't like the owl, but
for the same reasons as the crows I suppose.
