I've resumed semi-regular morning walks in Ft. Bayard park (corner of River Rd and Western Ave, NW DC) this past week. In the flurry of activity before this morning's first shower, I did see my first two CHIPPING SPARROWS of the spring. Chippies usually tend to accumulate here in the park in April and early May, sometimes peaking at 50-100 birds or more.
Today's female YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was a different bird from the male I've been seeing. Also heard a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET and saw at least two PHOEBES, one calling. A briefly perched SHARP-SHINNED HAWK disrupted the action only for a moment.
