This morning birding at the North Branch of the C&O Canal yielded a number
of new migrants including Blue-headed Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher,
Louisiana Waterthrush, Blue-winged Teal, as well as several White-crowned
Sparrow and Ring-billed Gull. The highlight was no fewer than 4 Wilson's
Snipe strutting in the wet farm fields. One even popped up and flew over my
head, landing beside me along the edge of the canal! I also checked out
Spring Gap and was able to find at least 2 singing male Yellow-throated
Warbler, in addition to a Louisiana Waterthrush and a Common Raven carrying
food. Later in the day, my wife Colleen and I went for a hike at Rocky Gap
State Park where a flock of 20+ Ring-billed Gulls and a couple Bonaparte's
Gulls were on the lake. Also we saw a pair of Brown Thrashers and heard
singing Pine Warbler and Yellow-rumped Warbler on the Lakeside Loop. It's
good to be out and about this time of year!
Good birding,
David
