this is the 1st year i have saw a male hairy woodpecker at my feeder although there are many downies. my question concerns the appearance of the back of the bird's head. the red spot is broken by a solid black stripe making actually 2 red spots there. the identity books don't show the view from the back. is this normal? has anybody else observed this? is this an abnormal appearance?
also the hooded-warbler at little bennett was heard by me today and not seen. the same thing happened yesterday also with Mark England and me. he was in some bushes on the south side of LB creek both days where the creek is near the road and he was close by but he just wouldn't appear.
