Walked along the Hyattstown Mill/Prescott Rd area of Little Bennett RP
this morning 10 am to 12 noon. Highlights include: 3 Kentucky Warblers
(1 heard, 2 seen), a Hooded and Magnolia Warbler. In the "bird behavior
I never seen dept", I watched a Great-crested Flycatcher, which was
perched on a wooden bridge rail, drop to the bridge floor and completely
sit down. Must have sat for almost a minute before flying back to bridge
railing and off into the trees. The bird did not seem to be doing
anything while it was sitting. No pecking at ants or picking up grit.
Weird. There was a second GC Flycatcher in trees nearby. Maybe some kind
of courtship behavior.
On the way over to Little Bennett, I stop for a few moments at a shallow
storm water management pond (viewable from Shamrock Glen Circle) on the
NW corner of the I-270/Rte 27 interchange that sometimes holds a few
shorebirds. Only shorebird present was a Killdeer but I was surprised to
see a female Hooded Merganser with 6 offspring.
