Early this morning Bill Hubick, John Hubbel, and I met up with Marshall
Illif at the Rt. 54 bridge in Fenwick and watched the Roseate Spoonbill feed
contently in Delaware. We then viewed Skimmer Island from 3rd St. Black
Skimmers were seen with the other usual terns. From the inlet Bill picked
up a Piping Plover on north Assateague. Marshall picked out a few Lesser
Black-backed Gulls on the island as well. Skimmer Island from Hooper's
Restaurant held Red Knots and Short-billed Dowitchers. At Eagles Nest
Campground two Gull-billed Terns, a single Sandwich Tern, and 19 Piping
Plovers were seen. We then parted ways with Marshall and the rest of the
crew went to Truitt's Landing where a Least Bittern sat up in a water bush
for about 15 minutes allowing everyone to get photos. We then decided to
head back to OC where Bill picked out a Wilson's Storm-Petrel flying past
the inlet. Viewing Skimmer Island from the bridge we saw 19 Red Knots.

We then headed to Elliot Island marshes where we met up with Tom & Geraldine
Field. Tom had two Moorhens and a Pied-billed Grebe waiting for us at
Moorhen Pond. A Least Bittern was calling here as well. Further south in
the marsh we spotted a single Black-necked Stilt, 9 Northern Harriers, and 7
Black-crowned Night-Herons. At 8:45pm two Short-eared Owls were also
observed. We would like to thank Dan Small for alerting the birding
community about the owls. Very cool to see Short-eared Owls in July!
