When we were in the Adirondacks, Gary Lee, who led the walk to Ferd's Bog
and is the co-author of the guide we were using, made a comment that all
swallow numbers seem to be down this year. He had no explanation for it. We
had a pair of Tree Swallows nest successfully in one of the boxes in our
yard. As for bugs, there are always plenty to go around. That's not it.
Particularly in the Adirondacks.

Walked up Sugarloaf yesterday from Mt Ephraim Rd. Nice morning for a hike,
but a lot of birds have shut up for the year. Among them, the Wormeaters.
However as I was reaching the top of the stairs on the Green Trail to the
top, I was squawked at by several species at once - mostly Carolina Wrens &
Chickadees. Some Wormeaters and a Towhee joined them. I have no idea what I
did to piss them off but I sure heard about it.
Probably the most numerous singer was Eastern Wood Pewee. Some Acadians,
Wood Thrush and Tanagers, too. Also thought I heard a GROUSE take off
(WHRRRR!), but I didn't see it go. Has anybody else seen or heard them on
Sugarloaf?
