Hi all,
I live in townhouse in Columbia. We don't have many mature trees in our immediate neighborhood. Over the years, I have heard Barred Owls calling at night, but them seemed to be off in the distance; probably from the woods near Sewells Orchard Park down the street.
But this year, there have been several nights where I heard a male calling persistantly very close to my house. It sounds like he is in my yard or my neighbor's. So close that when I opened my window to get a better listen, I frightened him off and didn't hear him again that night. In that area there is a maximum of four or five trees over 20 feet high.
Is it normal for Barred Owls to call from suburban areas like this? I certainly do love to listen to him!
Just curious,
