I went out to Mayo beach this morning and found a small group of Royal Terns hanging out among the more usual Forster’s Terns.  Really nice looks at good birds!

Two osprey were still there (or had they flown in from elsewhere?) and were hunting in the lake.  (Big Pond)

I also noted, briefly, an odd duck.  It had a pale bill, the body shape and coloration, mostly, of a female mallard. It had a brown head but darker brown/black feathers on the head just behind the bill, both above and below it.  It was swimming alone at first, then headed towards a group of mallards.  I lost track of it pretty quickly, but am a bit puzzled.  I suspect it’s some sort of mallard cross, but don’t know.  It just looks odd.    Should anyone be out scoping Mayo (Big Pond area) and have a better sense of what the odd duck might be, please let me know.

One other item.  I’ve been watching the snags on Collins Road, stopping by several times a day since the day the Western Kingbird was spotted.  The bird has not reappeared, at least not when I’ve been around.  So, I’m calling off the unofficial WEKI-watch.
