Had exactly 5 minutes at Thomas Point Park after getting out of work before the ranger kicked me out at 5PM sharp.  Large numbers of ducks have returned including ruddies, lesser scaup (probably some greater in there, but not enough time to find them), and canvasback (same for redhead - no time).  Now that the ice is gone, waterfowl are moving around the shorelines and inlets again in larger numbers. The ice was breaking up nicely in the protected coves, too.  Just as the Ranger was telling me it was time to go, a beautiful HORNED GREBE came swimming through my scope, tentatively making up for the lack of Great Cormorants on the Lighthouse.
Big January continues!  This is my first ever, so no records here, but what a fun way to start a birding year.  I'm hooked.

Notes:     No Great Cormorants at Thomas Point Light, but time was very limited before Park closed.  Also did not have time to scan fully for Redhead.  Large rafts of ducks close to shore this evening.  Mild temps, mid-50's.
