Carolina Wrens maintain their territories throughout the year, which is
their downfall in winters with significant snow cover. Unlike other birds
such as sparrows which can move considerable distances to find new food
sources wrens are restricted to a relatively small area and if snow covers
the ground (especially for extended periods of time) they have trouble
finding food and die.
Of course in residential areas where people feed birds they have a much
better chance of survival, so you can't compare what you see around your
house with areas away from feeders.
Carolina Wrens can produce 2-3 broods a year so the potential is there
for a relatively quick recovery. One of factors will be the weather during
the winter of 2010-2011.
