In July 2007, a Red-cockaded Woodpecker paid a visit to a back yard in Fairfax County, Virginia.  I believe it was a first ever (it was certainly a first recent) record for the species in northern Virginia, and is probably farther from the Piney Run colony than Point Lookout.  And it was so close to Montgomery County and to DC...
