My friend Kyle Carstensen was visiting from Colorado and we spent a hot, sticky day birding primarily in QA and Kent Counties. We had a few highlights among the heat waves before most of the birds quieted up by mid-morning.

We tried for the Sandhill Cranes (with minimal expectations) but did not see them on Bens Point Road. There were quite a few GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS singing fom the fields around the new development on the left side of the road.

We spent an unsuccessful 45 minutes listening for DICKCISSEL along Round Top Rd. along the edges of the Chino Farms property.

In KENT County we had our some activity near the intersection of Brices Mill and Langford Roads. An adult and first year male Orchard Oriole were singing their little hearts out. We also had great looks at a singing WARBLING VIREO that was as low as 20 feet in the tree branches.

Further up Langford Rd. at a farm pond there was a breeding plumage CATTLE EGRET (which prevented me from being shut out on county birds for the day).

We spent a few hours in Eastern Neck NWR. There were 9 mute swans hanging near the bridge at the entrance. We later heard one MARSH WREN and saw 9 LEAST TERNS. Our most unusual sighting was looking back to the right in a small cove at the end of the Ingleside Recreation Area where we saw a breeding plumage COMMON LOON (in late June).
