Maryland birders,

Does anybody know how to find the owner of an escaped Zebra Finch in Damascus
(Montgomery County), Maryland? Not to mention how to catch the bird if
necessary?

June

Subject: Zebra Finch Escapee

June,

Thank you for the information on the Zebra Finch. Our little friend is still
hanging out in our backyard -- he is much easier to hear than to see. He has
quite a distinctive call. I very much enjoy watching the birds in my backyard,
every morning I watch them at our feeder while I'm getting ready for work, so
I'm pretty used to the types of birds common in Damascus, Maryland. When I
heard our little friend's call, I knew I had not heard anything like that before

in MY backyard. When I finally actually saw him, I was sure he didn't belong
around here. My husband thought I was crazy :-) Until he actually saw him
too. Our little friend seems to have worked his way into being accepted by the
sparrows and wrens at our feeder (or at least they tolerate his presence), but
we are concerned about how he will survive the winter. I can't think of a
practical way to catch him, so other than taking your suggestion about providing

a habbitat of hay where he can burrow, I fear our little friend won't make it.
In the meantime, we will enjoy him and hope for the best.

Thank you for your help in identifying him.

Kind regards,

Mary Lee Keen

Hi Kenny,

It's a Zebra Finch, which is native to Australia and Indonesia. They are
commonly sold in the U.S. as cage birds. It is probably somebody's escaped pet.
Unfortunately, I don't know how you go about finding out whose it is. Maybe ask
around your

neighborhood?

I live in Damascus, Maryland. Do you know what species this bird
is?
