For those of you new to this area or, like me, relatively new, and haven't been to this place--it's pretty good. Seems like a nice range of habitat. I went there for the first time this morning, just to scope it out in the brief time that I had. Never before, until this morning, have I ever seen so many Hermit Thrush that I would jokingly think of them as junk birds. There were nearly 30 of them. I walked through one pocket, and they were tame b/c of their numbers. One flew right at me then landed on a branch a few feet away--and didn't even bother moving when I kept walking. I mainly checked out the wooded areas, but there are fields, and at the end I stumbled on what must be a maintenance road behind the Nature Center--it looked like a great area for sparrows as well as other birds. In the time I was there, I had several species of warbler and sparrow. Numbers of Sapsucker and Winter Wren and Blue-Headed. The very best part was hearing a complete (but quiet) song of the Brown Creeper and then seeing it. Various raptors as well. Seems like the sort of place that would get better and better after learning it (like many other places, I suppose). Tim Houghton (Glen Arm)
