A long, slow walk near Loch Raven Reservoir with 2 Winter Wrens, 13
Hooded Merganser, Golden-crowned Kinglets & a Red-breasted Nuthatch
being the stars of the show.
I rounded a corner just to see if there were any ducks hiding in the
inlet; instead I found a GC Kinglet foraging in the matted vegetation on
the stony shore. It was totally oblivious to our presence, moving
closer & closer & allowing wonderful viewing.
The group of Hooded Merganser had twice as many males as females. The
males were engaging in a good deal of courtship display, with crests
constantly raised & a good bit of head-shaking & head back-tilting.
Gorgeous group of birds!
