I just had the privilege to band Pennsylvania's first state record Anna's
hummingbird, an adult female, just north of Shartlesville, Berks County. The
bird has been coming to the feeder for three or four weeks, but the homeowner
just contacted my good friend Jack Holcomb yesterday, and he put her in touch
with me. As soon as I saw the bird at the feeder I suspected it was an
Anna's - she is larger than a rubythroat or rufous/Allen's, very dark
gray-green below with spotted flanks and sides, and very "cold" - no rufous
anywhere on the face, sides, flanks or tail. I set up my trap about 11:30, and
within 20 minutes she was caught. In-hand measurements and photos confirm the
ID, and I'll be submitting a report to PORC soon. The homeowner, Renee
Gery, is open to visitors, but as with the last couple of rare hummers, there
are some special considerations and guidelines. Renee lives in a mobile home
park next to Mountain Springs Campground, where parking is very limited. The
owner of both facilities, Steve Fisher, is asking birders to please park by the
campground office and walk the quarter-mile to Renee's house. Obviously, stay
on the road and out of people's driveways. Do not drive up to the house, or
cruise through the development. Directions are below. Also, Renee works
third shift, so PLEASE be quiet when visiting during the day. Do not knock at
her door, do not go up on her porch - in short, please be polite. If you need
bathroom facilities, there is a truck stop a mile away along the interstate.
Take I-78 to Exit 23, turning north on Mountain Road. Go about 1.2 miles and
just past the arena you'll see the entrance to Mountain Springs Campgrounds on
the left; pull in and park to the right of the small guard shack. If that's
full, birders may park to the left of the guard shack, down where there are
some picnic tables and a couple of travel trailers. From here, there are
two ways to walk. Either head east along Mountain Road a quarter mile to the
second left, then follow the road north into the mobile home park almost to the
end; Renee's house is M75, on the left. The feeder is on the porch, and easily
visible from the road. Alternately, you can walk up from the parking area
through the campground to the end of the road, then turn right and follow that
road east out of the campground into the mobile home park; go to the end and
turn right - M75 will be on the right a house or two down. The address for
the campground is 3450 Mountain Road, Hamburg PA, but this is not accurate for
Renee's house. Good luck, Scott Weidensaul Schuylkill Haven, PA
