Potluck and Lecture on Birds and Window Collisions

While most bird and nature lovers are aware that habitat loss and feral cats kill a lot of birds, many are surprised to learn that collisions with transparent or reflective surfaces such as glass and plexiglass are one of the biggest killers of birds in the world. Those who have studied the issue believe only habitat loss kills more birds. Join us as representatives of "Lights Out Baltimore" discuss their findings over the past two years in surveying a 3-mile loop of downtown Baltimore City, and the challenges migratory birds face year-round with building collisions and during migration with light pollution. You will also learn about products available to reduce bird strikes (including samples of bird-friendlier glass), DIY options, federal and international developments on the issue of bird/glass collisions, bird friendly building standards that have been introduced in Toronto and in progress in San Francisco, and most importantly, how you can help.

The potluck will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Oregon Ridge Nature Center with the talk commencing at 7:30 and lasting no later than 9 p.m.. Come along and bring a dish and some family and friends. No reservations required. The nature center is at 13555 Beaver Dam Road and can be reached from the Shawan Road West exit (#20B) from I83. Take Shawan Road to the traffic light at Beaver Dam, make a left and stay to the right to the parking lot.
