Talbot County Bird club vists Wye Island in Queen Annes County on 2 -20 -11

  Hi all here is a report of the Talbot County Bird Club's Visit to Wye Island near Queenstown  in Queen Annes County  on Sunday Feb 20,2011. 8 eager birders meet trip leader Danny  Poet at the bridge  to the Island . We ended the day with  with an offiical 45 species  . After the walk the hungry birders enjoyed a  excellent brunch at the near by home of  Carol and Joe Jelich  my thanks to them for hosting . Before leaving  for home  Joe took several of  us out into  his meadow to look at his created wetlands  a great  habitat all around   Bird list below .

Snow  Goose    20  flyovers 
Canada Goose   scores  as well as one that had an all  white body with a normal color neck and head  seen by several folks
Tundra Swan   5  flyovers 
Black Duck
Mallard 
Green Winged Teal
Canvasback     1 lone female 
Lesser Scaup
Bufflehead
Common Golden Eye      3     two male one female 
Ruddy Duck  2   They have been scarce here this winter 
Great Blue Heron   3
Black Vulture
Turkey Vulture
Bald Eagle  at least  6 
Northern  Harrier    1 adult male 
Red tailed Hawk     3
American Kestrel    1
Ring Billed Gull
Herring Gull 
Great Black Backed Gull 
Red Bellied Woodpecker 2
Downy Woodpecker    1
Flicker    3
Blue Jay
American Crow
Horned Lark     4
Carolina Chickadee   3      please send us some Black Capped  Chickadees 
Tufted Titmouse  2
White Breasted Nuthatch     2
Carolina Wren    2
Eastern Bluebird    2
American Robin     12

Eastern Towhee   1

Swamp Sparrow  3
White throated Sparrow 
Dark Eyed Junco    4      at the Jelich's feeders

Red Winged Blackbirds   
Common Grackle            blackbird  flock of at least 1,000  or more  mixed  half and half 
House Finch  2 at the Jelich's feeders 
Goldfinch     2  dittio location as above 

While not  on the  club trip list because of  only being seen by one person  or after the tally  these birds are worth mentioning 

Hooded Merganser     2     at the Jelich's  Terry Allen only 
Pileated Woodpecker   1      flying over Charmichael Rd  near the  cattle farm  seen by Danny Poet only 
Eastern Meadowlark   1  cattle farm Danny Poet only
Catbird     1     Wye Island    flew across a path Dave Palmer only 
NORTHERN BOBWHITE    20  The covey flushed  as we walked out  the Jelich's driveway to see the wetlands   5  of us saw them  but it was after the tally . Now that was a real treat
