Hello all.

Bob Ringler's post got me thinking about the history of the Swan Creek/Cox Creek/Brandon Shores property. When I was getting ready to do some research, I got a message from Rebecca Kolberg, who is a friend and a member of the North County Land Trust. Her message provided a wealth of information.

Here's the info:

Swan Creek is an actual creek that was dammed by CSX to create the pond which is the 'old' Swan Creek wetland. There is also a large pond off of Kembo road which was formerly contiguous with the pond(s) we refer to as the Swan Creek wetlands. This property is a conservation easement for mitigation of the Cox Creek Dredge fill site. The North County Land Trust and the Maryland Environmental Trust are co-holders of the easement.

The former name of the land, 'Brandon Shores', referred to, as Bob noted, the old community which once stood there. They were shore homes which had been built on leased land and the homes were demolished when the power plant was built. Rebecca has spoken to some former residents as well as other locals who remember hunting and fishing there.

Cox Creek is an actual creek, but that creek is located about one mile south of the dredge site. The name, therefore, comes from the old Cox Creek copper refinery which was at one time there (also known as the Kennecott refinery).

Hopefully this explains the name variation a bit more.
